At this point in January most of the New Year posts are over and the enthusiasm for great things in the new year is beginning to wane. This was evident to me last night as the gym was not busy for the first time since the first of the year. Is Wednesday a universal rest day or are resolutions already falling by the wayside? How long do your resolutions or goals stick with you?

I am not a fan of resolutions. I feel resolutions set us all up for failure. The whole process of thinking of resolutions gives me anxiety. Is it just me or does the end of the year come with as much guilt and/or disappointment as it does ambition to kick a new year’s butt? At the end of the year, I find myself reflective on things that I could have done differently, or places where I fell short of my previous year’s resolutions or intentions. Why do I do this to myself?!

Are you one that reflects on where you fell short, or are you the one that could care less about what is in the rear view mirror?

While there were shortcomings in 2016 with my personal goals and for the country, it was an awesome outdoors year for us as a family. Truth be told, it was our best outdoors year ever. Instead of thinking of all the places I fell short, I should instead reflect on our victories as a family. I find it hard to be good to myself and praise myself for the good things I have done. It is my perfectionist nature, I suppose. I never feel I am the best version of myself or did as much or as well as I thought I could.

Part of my downfall in celebrating victories is that I don’t make a note of them. Enter the 365 Mile Challenge. I’m doing it. The mileage itself won’t be a new victory, but officially keeping track of those miles will be. It is my hope that by logging something as simple as trip mileage, I will log other achievements, happy moments, or flies that worked (we already tote the damn journal everywhere…now maybe I will write in it).

 

 

What is the 365 mile challenge? The idea is simple, get outside and move for 365 miles in 2017. Any and all self-propelled miles count. Hiking, snowshoeing, skiing, biking, walking, or cross-country skiing all count. The challenge was created by fellow outdoor bloggers. These gals know the importance of getting outside, but also know sometimes we need a bit of extra motivation to get our butts out the door. By joining the challenge you will have a source of daily motivation, accountability, and an opportunity to network with other like minded active folks like yourself. There are also PRIZES!

The 365 mile challenge might look a little different for you than it will for me. After all, our outdoor experiences are unique to us and our families. For me, the miles I will log will be for destination hikes only. Essentially we hike nearly everyday; we have dogs and a plethora of open spaces around the house. Those daily hikes will not count towards my mileage goal; it is my hopes that not including those daily forays into nature, I will have a number to keep striving for and the initiative to not stop logging those adventures in March or April when our lives tend to get busier.

I agree, Jennifer! Besides the miles, I have set to do yoga 5 times a week, which I know will help me get my mind where I want it to help me achieve that balance and happiness I have been missing.
